The source for transplant hairs affects the quality of results. The process of relocating hairs from one area of the scalp to another relies on the patient’s own hair, no one else’s. The majority of patients are male, and they often have a clear, appropriate source of follicles for harvest because of the pattern androgenic alopecia follows. For most men with male pattern baldness, the hairline will recede, and a bald spot appear at the crown. The hairs at the back and sides of the head may remain dense and completely untouched. That’s because the follicles in these regions are DHT resistant and designed to be permanent. They make excellent source grafts because of their resistance to falling out and the natural density in their growth area.
These follicles are removed in small bunches and transferred to the thinning areas where they are reimplanted. They typically stay and grow for many years there and do not succumb to the pattern baldness other hairs in the region suffer from.
The procedure can also be done using the FUT, or strip harvest method. This more traditional approach allows the surgeon to remove a strip of the scalp at the back of the head and use every square millimetre of it to create hair grafts. It can be a helpful technique if hair thinning is diffused over a wide area in the donor region, or if the patient wants a significantly high number of grafts. The downside is a longer recovery time and visible scar remaining at the back of the scalp.
