What are the leading causes of Hair Loss?

Leading Causes of Hair Loss

Early hair loss in men often goes unnoticed.

Other guys live in a state of worry about each hair that sheds because male pattern baldness runs in their family, and they’re bracing for the inevitable. Up to 50% of women report losing significant hair in their later years, and men experience hereditary hair loss at a rate of 75%-85% on average. Does stress cause it? A poor diet? Do you just have unlucky genes? Most men with hair loss want to know what lifestyle factor they can change to prevent or reverse their problem, but when the culprit is genetic hair loss, men need the help of hair restoration specialists. Before you panic, let’s take a scientific look at hair loss for men to evaluate what’s typical, and what calls for intervention.

Men’s hair loss- The natural growth cycles

Because of natural hair renewal cycles, you’ll lose between 100-150 hairs per day. If you notice strands on the pillow and in the shower drain, it’s not necessarily an escalating issue. Avoiding shampooing your scalp for fear of losing more hair won’t help. Those strands that fall out are programmed and ready to do so whether you tug on your hair or not. What’s causing it?

Hair Growth Cycle

The stages of hair growth and shedding are explained below to help you understand the process.

This active growing season for your hairs lasts anywhere between 2 to 7 years. At any given time, between 80%- 90% of the hair on your head is in the anagen stage.

Known as the transition phase, the hair root shrinks for roughly two weeks, then detaches from the dermal papilla.

Lasting 2-3 months, this resting phase accounts for roughly 10%-15% of your hair. Strands stay in place but do not grow during Telogen.

Shedding to make room for new hair occurs during exogen. This phase causes loss of a hundred or so hairs each day.

Androgenic Alopecia causes hair loss in men

So, why are some people losing more than the natural growth phases account for?

Androgenic Alopecia:

Androgenic alopecia is the term doctors use to describe the most common, hormone-related hair loss in men. If a man has close family members with this condition, they can expect it to show up on their own scalp at some point also.

While women will see diffused thinning all over the head, men tend to experience characteristic male pattern baldness. It begins with receding at the temples and frontal hairline. A thin patch at the occipital region then forms. More widespread thinning of the crown progresses until the bald spot at the back meets up with receding hairline at the front. Eventually a well-known horseshoe-shaped band of hair remains at the back and sides.

Of course, not every man experiences full, severe hair loss through all the stages. One thing that’s essential for guys to understand is that the idea of thick hair as a sign of masculinity is false. Most hair loss in men is triggered by sensitivity to DHT, a hormone by-product of testosterone. An enzyme called 5 alpha-reductase (5-AR) converts testosterone to DHT. Nearly 10% of your testosterone produced each day will be converted to dihydrotestosterone ( DHT.) If you’re susceptible to hair loss because it runs in your family, DHT will bind with receptors in your follicles, so they shrink, weaken and die. This is called ‘miniaturization,’ and it’s one of the signs your experienced hair transplant surgeon will assess for during your consultation.

Solutions for hair loss in men- what can you do?

You may be seeking a one-time, effective way to stop hair loss. Plenty of people shy away from well-known hair growth medications because of the equally well-known side effects they can bring. Choosing a lasting, natural solution like hair transplant is a smart move, but how can you ensure that you don’t suffer the disappointment of lacklustre results or failed grafts? A hair transplantation surgery in the wrong hands may utilize poor technique, outdated equipment or a lack of technician experience and talent.

You can rest assured that today’s hair transplant technology allows you to avoid visible scars or other evidence of your procedure. More men and women are choosing hair transplants because they beat medication, messy products and wigs that come with maintenance and unnatural results. Busy professionals on the go don’t typically want to fuss with products and pieces that don’t pass up-close inspection anyway. The money spent over the years on gimmicks that don’t work is wasted. Stop throwing your money away and invest in a lasting solution.

How do hair transplants work?

Follicular unit extraction, known as FUE, doesn’t require excision of a large piece of scalp. Instead, tiny micro grafts are punched out one by one, leaving virtually no trace. The recovery time is rapid and far more comfortable than past procedures. This micro-surgery is completed at a rapid pace in one, convenient in-office visit.

While you watch TV, listen to music and relax, our experts can restore an entire region of hair. Patients will typically transfer between 1000-2500 grafts in one session. Each of these tiny units contains between 1-4 follicles. It will take a few months for new growth to appear, and at the 12-month mark, patients enjoy life with fully restored locks.

The ARTAS® system is a state-of-the-art robotic technology exclusive to just a few, leading hair transplant clinics in Canada. It’s revolutionized the tedious process of follicular unit extraction by speeding up repetitive, precise movements required and eliminating risks for human error.

A high definition stereoscope and Artificial Intelligence™ algorithms Identify and select only the best quality, viable hair follicles to transplant. This increases success rates exponentially. Grafts are transplanted to mimic the natural patterns and direction of real hair growth, so no one will know you’ve had a transplant! The robotic system also creates optimal incisions and recipient sites to ensure implanted grafts thrive and don’t incur unnecessary damage. Advanced FUE delivers an over 90% take rate. There’s never been a more sure-fire way to reverse hair loss for men.

Man Hair Loss Toronto

Are you a Candidate?

Are you wondering if hair transplant surgery will work for you?

Men usually find themselves in one of 7 general stages of the balding scale. The “Norwood Scale” helps classify early, mid and severe stages of hair thinning. One of the reasons it’s difficult to know your options and begin planning without an expert consultation is that you must determine what kind of thinning you have.

Telogen effluvium is characterized by rapid hair thinning. During the resting phase of the hair cycle, a shock to the system may cause those hairs to “let go.” Causes of shock loss include surgery, deprivation dieting, and emotional stress. Certain medications also lead to temporary hair loss in men. The best way to determine what’s causing your shedding and what options you have is to take the next step with a no-obligation consultation. Early intervention with a variety of proven surgical and non-surgical treatments is possible for you.

Don’t lose any more hair than you need to. Our experts can give you professional recommendations to help you hold on to the hair you have, and to restore it with the industry’s most advanced technology.
