Toronto hair transplant recovery – Take comfort measures
Although mild swelling persists on the scalp and forehead for just a few days, and pain is minimal, there are a few things you can do to soothe the sensitive area.
Your surgeon can recommend an over the counter pain reliever like Tylenol if needed. You can expect minor spotting for a day and slight numbness of the treatment area. If desired, ice or cold packs can be applied to the scalp for brief periods.
The skin in your donor and recipient areas may be temporarily pink postoperatively, and small scabs will develop around the implanted grafts. While these symptoms dissipate quickly, to improve your hair transplant recovery, your doctor may recommend topical ointments or other products to calm and nourish your scalp.
Avoid alcohol and nicotine
Before and after your hair transplant recovery, you’ll likely be advised to stop drinking alcohol. It may be for just a few days, but it’s a precaution to ensure you don’t bleed unnecessarily. As well, nicotine use constricts healthy blood flow, which slows healing and can lead to problems with hair graft survival. You’ll want to do everything you can to ensure your precious grafts thrive, so listen when your doctor advises no smoking before and after surgery.
Avoid blood thinning supplements or medications
You may not realize that your innocent ginseng drinks, garlic supplement or omega-3s could have a detrimental effect, but when it comes to bleeding, they do. These and many anti-inflammatory medications can increase your risk of bleeding. Unless you have a medical need for a specific medication, those that cause bleeding will be discontinued temporarily. It’s essential that you let your surgeon know about everything you take so they can weigh the risks and advise you about the safest approach.

What to do, and not to do
During Hair Transplant Recovery in Toronto
- Take all your prescribed antibiotics
- Although your risk of infection will be very low with advanced, micro-surgery techniques, you’ll be given a prescription for antibiotics as a precaution.
- Protect your scalp from the sun
If you are recovering from a hair transplant in the summer, or you live in a warm-weather location, you’ll need to pay extra attention to sun protection for your scalp. We recommend wearing a loose, comfortable hat whenever outdoors for the first two weeks, then apply sunblock liberally throughout the following year. - Avoid scrubbing
Hair transplant surgeons will usually advise a spray on shampoo for a few days after the procedure so you can avoid the pressure of water and shampoo on delicate grafts. Patients can wash their hair gently within a few days. However, this needs to be done with clean water, and no scratching or rubbing at the hair grafts. Specialized hair growth shampoo like Revivogen Bio-Cleansing Shampoo and Thickening Conditioner are often recommended to feed the scalp with safe, nourishing cleansing care. - Don’t dye your hair for 6 to 8 weeks
If you color your hair, it’s advisable to avoid it within a week or two before the procedure, and for 6 to 8 weeks during hair transplant recovery. In Toronto, hair restoration clients are advised to use hair colouring agents which are gentle and safe, and only after their surgeon has cleared them. The above do’s and don’ts will be customized by your surgeon. Depending on your health picture, your procedure and needs, you could have receive other instructions as well.
It’s wise always to ask your surgeon when you’re not sure about an activity, a treatment or particular concern. They’re available to listen to you, advise you and help you through a comfortable problem-free hair transplant recovery. The hair specialists at Nova Medical Hair Transplant, will be happy to schedule your private consultation and get started planning your personal restoration journey. To learn more, contact us today.
