Do you colour your hair?

Today men and women visit the salon or DIY their grey coverage. It raises the question, after your hair transplant in Toronto, will you be able to colour your hair? If so, when? Here we’ll take a look at when it’s considered safe to proceed with regular styling and hairdresser visits, and when you can go ahead and dye your new locks.

What about before your Toronto hair transplant?

Before you get a list of dos and don’ts together for after your procedure, it’s essential to know what to avoid beforehand too. Your surgeon will likely ask you to stop taking blood thinners such as Aspirin, other NSAIDs, and some supplements so that you don’t bleed or bruise unnecessarily the day of surgery. Usually, avoiding these two weeks prior is sufficient. Applying hair dye to your scalp in the weeks prior will also need to stop. Depending on the product used, chemical residue, temporary scalp skin irritation, or dryness can occur. You’ll want your skin and hair follicles in optimal condition the day of treatment. You’ll also need to be mindful of the sun, both pre and post procedure, to prevent a tan or sunburn on your head in the weeks leading up to your Toronto hair transplant.

After the procedure

The process moves follicles from one region of your scalp ( usually the back or sides) to another, ( usually the crown and hairline.) This is carried out with a small rotary punch tool connected to digital or robotic systems that help to regulate and preserve hair grafts. Your surgeon will punch out a tiny section of the scalp surrounding each bunch of 1-4 follicles. The units are implanted at the recipient site using small surgical slits.

It’s essential to understand that this process doesn’t add or create hair, but simply relocates the hairs you have. As they are your real growing strands, you’ll be able to treat them as you did before, just as soon as they’re healed.

It takes roughly 1 week for the extraction and implant sites to heal. During the first 5 days, you’ll be advised to rinse the hair only and to avoid any pressure or other interference with the scalp. That includes applying products, and even shower head pressure must be avoided. After that, regular washing can resume, but gentle handling and certain activity restrictions are still in place between 7-14 days post procedure. You can expect the transplanted hairs to fall out sometime between 2-3 weeks in most cases. These are not the follicles, only the temporary strands which shed to make room for new hair.

In most cases, you’ll be free to resume normal activity and visits to the salon at 3-4 weeks after your procedure. When all incisions are completely healed, and the grafts have established themselves, regular treatment, including cutting and colouring, can resume. We recommend that you talk with your surgeon about the specific products and chemicals you may use in case a different one will be advised as safer for you.

Your new hair growth will be seen beginning around 3 months and will have the same properties- including colour that it did in its original location. If you have questions about your options, you’re welcome to schedule a consultation and meet with one of our experts in person.
