FUE vs FUT

The hair transplant debate is a popular one, and you’ll find plenty of pros and cons listed for each method. The best choice for you is highly personal. What are your goals? Your budget? Your needs? The best way to determine the right hair restoration method is to meet with a specialist in person. The team at Nova Medical Hair Transplant will welcome you for an exam and detailed discussion about your best options.

Hair transplant techniques

There are two standard methods for redistributing growing hair follicles:

FUE-Follicular unit excision ( or extraction)

FUT-Follicular unit transplantation (also called the strip method)

These two methods of transplantation are similar, but their harvesting approach is different.

The area of the scalp where viable hair follicles are taken from is usually the back or side. This is where dense, DHT-resistant hairs grow. No matter the method, digital or robotic system used, donor hairs will be extracted from an optimal donor zone.

FUE uses a small rotary puch device to extract individual follicle units containing a few hairs each. The process is renowned for being minimally invasive and leaving only tiny circular scars that blend well with the surrounding hair. Because incisions are less than 1 mm wide and shallow, they also close and heal quickly, making FUE recovery fast.

Conversely, FUT begins with the excision of a strip of scalp at the donor zone. The opening is stitched or stapled shut, then the donor tissue is dissected under a stereomicroscope to create individual grafts.

Follicle implantation is identical for FUT or FUE

In both procedures, small incisions are created in the recipient areas to match the natural hair growth pattern and direction.

Your hair transplant surgeon will strategically plan a realistic hairline, even utilizing tiny single hair grafts at the edges.

Recovery comparison

Patients can undergo either method of restoration with only local or IV sedation, and return home to recover the same day. FUE doesn’t require stitches and the small openings at the donor site will close within just a few days. Most patients take between 3 to 5 days off work.

The strip method means a slightly longer recovery time due to the full thickness linear incision.

In either case, you’ll be provided with post-operative instructions that include temporarily avoiding exercise, heavy lifting, swimming and a few other activities.

Cost comparison

FUE cost per graft is typically a little higher because of its time consuming, meticulous nature and the high overhead costs of advanced robotic systems. This same equipment tends to deliver higher success rates, less scalp trauma and minimal scarring, so many people choose the more substantial investment.

The best method for you will depend on how much hair density you have, your expectations and goals. There’s no best approach for everyone. Instead, hair transplants are entirely customizable and based on unique needs.
